Rimadyl

Another horror story about Rimadyl....

Date: Thu, 2 Feb 2006 07:21:33 -0700
A totally preventable tragedy that we can all learn from !

It is with unbearable sadness that  I share this news, but I share it hoping that it will spare the life of other dogs.  Cody, a precious 16 week old Labradoodle,  had to be humanely euthanized on Wednesday, Feb. 1.  He was dying of renal failure, and when nothing more could be done to save his life, I made the extremely painful decision to free him from his suffering.  Cody's renal failure was brought on by a Rimadyl injection given during his neuter.  This shot was given after telling my vet that I did not want Rimadyl given (because I was afraid of this happening).

At seminars, vets are encouraged to give Rimadyl during surgery to "increase their profit margins".  Rimadyl is an NSAID which should be given with food.  Having it administered during surgery after the dog has been fasting for up to 16 hours defies all reason.  The horrible side effects take 3-6 days to appear after the surgery.  I will spare you the appalling details of the 5 days of misery that Cody suffered, but know that Rimadyl can strip the GI tract creating massive bleeding, and cause liver and kidney failure.

Cody should never have been given the injection in the first place because I had told my vet to never use the drug on my dogs again during surgery. Cody paid with his life for her inexcusable refusal to follow my wishes. In addition, the vet noticed before operating that Cody was somewhat anemic (he had arrived with an enormous worm load), and didn't bother to call and ask if I wanted her to wait (which I would have).   7 different homes wanted to add Cody to their family.  He should have had a wonderful life ahead Please don't let Cody's death be in vain.  There have been class-action lawsuits due to the deaths caused by Rimadyl.  Used intelligently, it can bring relief for dogs suffering from arthritis, but it should not be given to dogs as a "painkiller" during surgery. Pfizer no longer runs commercials about Rimadyl because the company would have had to add the word, "Death" to the list of side effects listed in the commercials.  Learn about Rimadyl and its potential deadly side effects.

I forgot to add that "pre-surgery bloodwork" does not mean unnecessary drugs will not cause harm.  The kidneys must be 2/3s gone before any abnormality shows up on the bloodwork.  Likewise, liver damage must be extreme to appear.  My beloved 11 yr old Standard Poodle, Champ, who is dying from liver failure caused by overvaccinating (in the south where I am from, puppies get 4 puppy shots and a rabies shot every year--it is now known that Standard Poodles are extremely vulnerable, along with Akitas, Weims, Irish Setters, Chihuahuas, along with others) had a full CBC done with a special test just for liver function. In spite of the fact that he was already having grand mals from liver toxicity, the blood work showed that everything was in great working condition.  Champ was expected to be gone 22 months ago, but with twice daily Milk Thistle (now up to 8,000 mg a day), is still hanging in there, although his time is running out.
Bloodwork without any red flags does not mean that it is safe to administer unnecessary and potential harmful medications and why take the chance?
