Thank you
Dear Angels,
For Helping
Me to walk.
Honey
♥

Twice to the Rainbow Bridge and back again
and now her 2nd Total Hip
Replacement.
Today, June 25th 2010, Honey is
4 years old now. She has had her 2nd Total Hip Replacement and
is doing very
well. Honey is still in Columbia at the clinic waiting to be
discharged so she can go back to her foster home.
Her surgery went well in spite of
some complications. An extra bone graft was necessary so the
new hip will hold in place. If all goes well she will be
allowed to go home on Monday the 28th.
My life so far:
How I came to Pets Haven

On my way home from the vet. "I wonder what happened and
where I am."
This is how it all started, told by Cat my
foster mom:
On an early Friday
afternoon.
I was driving along on my route as a currier in rural
Arkansas, where dogs and cats are running loose everywhere and
hardly a day goes by when I don't see at least one new dog lying
beside the street. This time the little body of a yellow lab
looking pup was lying in the middle of the street. I stopped
to move her little body at least out of the middle of the road,
I really thought she was dead. Her little tongue was hanging out of
her mouth and there was no sign of movement.
When I got close that little tongue suddenly disappeared in
her mouth, that's
when I got very quick. She was unconscious, real cold and her gums
white. I rolled her into a blanket and put her into my car.
Fortunately the nearest vet was only a few blocks away.
The little girl was badly in shock and needed help fast.
I had no idea if she would live. The vet didn't even want to see
her, he was on his way out for the day but I wouldn't leave. He
finally agreed to stay and treat her for shock to keep her alive.
I called my husband in Fort Smith who took off work and came to pick
her up. I had to continue on my route and we met in Fort
Smith, getting back at the same time. We switched cars and I
rushed her to our own vet in Fayetteville after hours.
The little girl stayed mostly unconscious during the trip.
Our vet was waiting when I got there, her color had already improved
a little and she woke up occasionally. All x-rays turned out
great, nothing broken at all, no internal injuries either but a
concussion and a few bruises.
She
stayed overnight and when I came to check on her in the morning she
had already eaten breakfast with a good appetite (she needs it, she
is very skinny). I took her home and she is recovering here.
She will have to stay quiet and sleep a lot for a while for her
little head to heal properly but she already goes out to potty and
comes to ask for food when she wakes up hungry, then back to sleep.

On my way home from the vet. "I wonder what happened and
where I am."
Her luck was only to last until Sunday
morning.
By then we called her Honey and she had eaten again
during the night, which was good. But Honey didn't seem to
feel as good as Saturday. She wouldn't get up to go potty, I
carried her and she did her business and went right back in to her bed
to sleep. We thought she was just tired, she had been through
a lot and still had the concussion. By noon she vomited her
food up, I checked her temperature and it was at 102.5. An
hour later she vomited again and her temp had gone up to 103.8.
I called our vet. His immediate reaction was Parvo, I brought her back
to the vet.

I am going back to the vet; they say I have Parvo, don't know what
that is but I sure feel awful again.
She tested highly positive for Parvo, that was
Monday morning. Tuesday evening one of our veterinarians
called to prepare us for the worst. When I visited her
Wednesday morning, I got a tired look and a very small tailwag, then she went back to sleep. A friend called later
that morning to remind us of Tamiflu, a drug now used against Parvo.
Our vet got it right away and she was on it within 2 hours. We
kept hoping and got lots of good thoughts, well wishes and prayers
for Honey to get better.
The break came that night, her blood count
started going back up and she sat up on her own Thursday morning.
When she was offered food she actually ate some and kept it down for
several hours. Then, in the afternoon, she didn't vomit
anymore and the next meal stayed down. I came to visit her Friday
morning and to my surprise was told she could go home. Honey
has since made big steps in her recovery every day and is now
playing and eating with appetite almost like a normal puppy would. It
is only Sunday, one week after her Parvo diagnosis and she is
outside playing for a while.
Honey who seemed so lucky when she was found,
has more problems to overcome. Before she can go to a forever
home she will have to have Hip surgery. While she seemed
alright at first, it became clear during her growing spurts that her
walking and sitting has been getting more and more difficult for
her. The X-rays taken of her hips showed serious Hip Dysplasia and
the accident made the problem far worse on the side she had been
hit. She is now scheduled at Columbia University in May to
undergo her first replacement. Please wish her well and send
her many good thoughts.

Exhausted but back home on Friday, still
have an IV catheter in my arm.
I feel much better
today (Sunday).

Skinny
but on top of the world. Her luck wouldn't
last! Now Honey is waiting to go back to a hospital again for
Total Hip Replacement surgery. She
was diagnosed with bilateral luxation of the hip joints
On My Way To Columbia
What a day! We are
all packed for tomorrow and ready to go. The drive is about 6.5
hours and we'll have to take brakes.
I'm still kind of damp
from my bath. Mom Cat wanted to take pictures of me with my new
collar and sitting next to the car but I wanted to watch a beetle
under a rock and couldn't be convinced to move. Besides I hate to
sit it doesn't feel good.

Dad Charles is
installing a TV and a doggy gate in my room, so I won't be too bored
when I get back. I like watching some TV but would rather be
outside playing with the others. I guess patience isn't my strong
side. It is all so exciting and makes me want to talk all the time,
not really the thing to do, mom Cat says. Well here are a couple of
pictures with my new collar of me not cooperating at all.
We just saw that some
Angels have sent presents. Thank you sooo much.
I'll talk to you again
when we get to Columbia, if mom Cat can get the laptop working.
So long,
Your Honey pup.
Hello everybody, I am
back home.
Mom Cat says to keep it short because she still has to unpack and
then catch up on all the things that didn't get done while we were
gone.
My surgery went very well and Dr. Cook is very pleased. They looked
at those gray pictures and uuhd and aahhd and told me what a great
girl I am, so it must be good. My next hip surgery shouldn't be
scheduled until about 6 months from now so I can carry all the
weight on the one they just did.
You can see my scar and it looks all clean no swelling at all so
far.

My problem is that I am very bored already because I have to stay in
a small area, cage size, for two weeks and have to keep this
horrible plastic thing around my head until the staples come out.
I got to chew on my bone some this morning, mom Cat held it for me
because I can't get to anything with my collar.
I want to thank all the Angels who are helping to pay for me.
Lots and lots of smooches for you all.
Honey
A whole months later
and all I've grown is leggins. It is too embarrassing at least
I am not going to the park yet. I feel so much better but I am
not allowed to run and play yet. My next x-rays will be in 3
weeks and then we will know how well it all went.
Well looking at the
picture below maybe my coat is getting a little better.

December 07. I
should be going for surgery soon but we are going to wait until Spring
when the weather gets better because half of my body has to be
shaved and coats would be rubbing on the wound when I go for
exercise walks. I am doing pretty well and can run and play.
Only when the weather changes or I have been sleeping and then want
to get up my bad leg hurts. Mom Cat sometimes gives me a goody
(Rimadyl) she says it helps.
My waiting
should also help getting more money saved because we have several
other little dogs who also need surgery. Loosing my big sister
Kate was also real tough, she went away really sudden and
everybody was very sad here. Please look at Andy's and Hope's
story and help if you can.
Have a Great
Holiday Season,
Your Honey Pup.
June 21st 2010.
Well, it was a long wait and today the doctors said I will get my
second hip. Mom Cat says the surgery and rehab will be tough
but afterwards I'll be allowed to run and play. In the
meantime I'll watch a lot of TV. I love to watch Victoria
Stilwell in her show "It's Me or The Dog". She is amazing.
She gets right into our heads, she knows how we think. What's
really great is that Victoria tells our people what we really need
and how to talk to us.
Mom Cat watches
Victoria too and I don't get away with anything. Tried to nip
one of the cats I live with (he is obnoxious) and promptly ended up
in time out for that. So I guess I better be nice.
I'll let you
know how it goes.
As always Your
Honey Pup.
To my Dear
Angels,
August 3rd 2010.
The surgery went well in spite of some complications. I got
sick from all the medications and lost a lot of weight. Even
though I felt awful for a few days it all worked out because I am
now at my perfect weight for the leg to heal.
Finally I am
allowed for short times off the leash in the front yard. It is
so hard to be patient and not run and play with the others but my
right leg doesn't always do exactly what I want. We went back
to Columbia to see why that is and the doctor told us that my leg's
nerves still have to heal from the surgery and that I soon will have
control again.
Thank you all
again for all the wonderful help. I'll let you know when I can
run and play again.
Your Honey Pup
December 10th
2010.
Hello to all my
Angels!
I just wanted to
wish everybody a wonderful Holiday Season. It is my first
Christmas with both hips working. I go for walks and can run
and play and have a wonderful time. Mom Cat tells me to be
careful with Andy because he still has bad legs and could easily
fall if I bump into him.
Thank you all so
much for helping me. Please don't forget all our other special
fur kids who come in all the time and need our help.
Forever Yours,
Honey Pup
